GANDRUD "ALABAMA RECORDS" BOOKS - 12/19/00 - Can anyone tell me where I can purchase copies of the "Alabama Records" series that Pauline Gandrud wrote with her sister-in-law. Trying to do research on ancestors that lived in Jackson, and Madison and possibly surrounding counties. Thank you. -- Steve Scott  sscott119@home.com

HOLDEN - 12/19/00 - My name is Jim Holden. Since 1993, I have been searching for info on my GGGrandfather, Jesse Holden, who married Selena Shenton 17 Feb 1835.  I was about to give up when  I found the listing on the Green Co. web site. The next info was on 1860 Census for Choctaw Co. He lists birth place as SC. I can`t find any info between 1835 and 1860. If anyone knows of anyway I can find when he left Green Co. or any other, please contact me. Thank You. -- Jim Holden holdenjl@earthlink.net

SCOGGINS - 12/17/00 -   I got interested in genealogy and started poking around on the internet a few weeks ago because I discovered that my great great grandmother (Sophia Simpson Scoggins, 1824 - 1890) is buried about 15 miles from my current home. My branch of the family moved to MS about 1901 and I never knew (nor, to be honest, cared) about the family history when I was younger. I discovered this site because I learned a few days ago that oral history in another branch of the family says that Sophia's husband, Charnel Wiley Scoggins, died in Green County. The story is... Charnel Scoggins, b. July 2 1813, was a Primitive Baptist Minister. "Near the end of the Civil War."  He died of pneumonia in Greene County, AL, where he pastored a church, after being locked with two or three other men in an unheated church during extremely cold weather, by another group of men who thought they were draft dodgers. Charnel & Sophia's youngest was born August 6, 1865, so I assume Charnel died during the winter of 1865, though it may have been 1866. I would like to pinpoint Charnel's date of death and burial place, if possible. I plan to go to Eutaw when I get a chance to do some research at the court house and the Historical Society, but can't very well go over and poke around the whole county looking for a grave that may well not even have a marker. I would appreciate any information or suggestions that you might have, and I certainly understand if you have nothing to offer. -  "Wayne Scoggins" w_scoggins@hotmail.com

Township & Range Map - 11/05/00 - Just recently, I found some fairly concrete information that links my direct family with Green County, AL. Several BLM land records suggest that the family was in the area by 1825. I would like to know approximately where they lived so that I can identify where court records would most likely be archived. However, after a little researching and analyzing census records, I've noticed that some of the families went back and forth from Pickens to Greene from census to census. Whether they moved or the lines just changed is still unclear. One of the families that I am most interested patented property in what is now Sumter County and another was in what was described as Pickens. Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of a township & range map that would identify approximately where the property was located? I'm hoping the property wasn't in Pickens because their early records were destroyed. I'm in the process of looking through the microfilmed probate records but haven't found anything yet. -- Kristina Harris  kharris@televar.com

HALES - 10/7/00 -   I am actively researching the Hales family who immigrated from Ireland to North Carolina to Greene County, Alabama. I am specifically trying to find the names and vitals of the parents of a Matthew Hales who was married to a Jensha (or Jerusha) ??? - maiden name unknown. I'm also looking to find the maiden name of Matthew's spouse Jensha. Both Matthew and Jensha were born in North Carolina around 1790, yet I do not know the county or township in which they were born. Knowing this would also be helpful in my research. Based upon some sketchy Census data for North Carolina in 1790, I found a listing for a Josiah Hales in Chatham County, and wonder if this is perhaps the father of Matthew Hales because Matthew Hales had a son named Josiah? Ultimately, I would like to trace this family line back to its Irish roots. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate receiving any information that could be helpful. Thank you. -- "kay jaycey" texank94@hotmail.com

Greene County-ALGenWeb- 10/7/00 - I have been trying to find information on my ancestors who lived primarily in Greene County. I cannot find the names of any plantation owners for the Lewiston-Mantua area. I did come across documents on the Walton and Webb family that owned slaves in Greene County-not sure if this is the right family. I have no marriage or birth records other than what has been passed down verbally over the years. Luther was married to Mary Lou SHEPPEARD born 16 September 1911 and died 25 March 1989.Both are buried at Reed's Chapel in Webster County. Mr. Bailey's great grandfather was James E. BAILEY born 12 August 1878 and died 11 February 1959. James was married to Florence AINSWORTH was born 27 January 1881 and died 13 September 1951. They are also buried at Reed's Chapel. Mr.Bailey's great-great grandfather was John R. BAILEY, born 22 April 1843 and died 15 July 1890. John's wife was Mary Elizabeth INGE born 14 December 1842 and died 22 March 1892. They are buried at Sarepta Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Montgomery County. The father of John R. BAILEY was William R. BAILEY, born 20 September 1810 and died 15 May 1876 and was married to Celia L. E. C. PEEBLES who was born 28 May 1821 and died 1 February 1892. William and Celia are buried in the Old Peebles Family Cemetery in Webster County. Also buried in this cemetery is Alpha PEEBLES, one of the early settlers of Choctaw County, Mississippi. Mr. Bailey said that he has an extensive collection of black and white photographs of many of the headstones from the Old Peebles Family Cemetery that were taken at a cemetery cleaning that took place in 1983. It is thought that William R. BAILEY was born in Abbeville County or Lauren County, SC. Mr. Bailey tends to believe that the father of William was Edward BAILEY, who appears with William R. BAILEY on the 1840 Choctaw County, Mississippi Census. He has detailed census, marriage and death records regarding the BAILEY line. Mr. Bailey is also extremely interested in acquiring copies of any documents, pictures, war records or any information whatsoever regarding the 30th Mississippi Infantry Company C, Choctaw Planters, that his great-great grandfather, John R. BAILEY, served in. He will pay for any copying expenses incurred and will share all information that he has collected on the BAILEY line. Mr. Bailey states that anyone with information may call him at the number given at the beginning of the query, leave a brief message on his voice mail, and he will gladly call you back at his expense.-- "James Bailey" neworleans59@hotmail.com

Hicks - 04/16/00 - I am trying to find a Martha Hicks.who marriage records show married a Berry D Bunn in Green co in 1843.I believe Martha to be the Daughter of Tilmon Hicks who married Martha Jones in Green in 1822. Hopefully, somone may have transcribed the markers many years ago. I am seeking any information about the cemetery, the tombstones, and inscriptions from as early as possible. The information in Mrs. S. M. Marshall's Greene County cemetery book is from about 1980, I believe; unfortunately, a lot had been lost by that time. Jim Taylor ladasca@aol.com

IRBY/ SMITH - 04/01/00 - I am wondering if there might be anything written about Greene County, Alabama. I have found that possibly my great-great grandmother lived there with a great aunt during the 1860 time frame. My gr-gr-grandmother was Amanda Irby, who is believed to be the daughter of James H. Irby and Mary Hill who married in Greene County in 1839. If this is so, she is the a great granddaughter of William Smith and great niece of Anna Smith who lived there during the time I mentioned. I would very much like to find out any information I could about the William Smith family including daughters Anna Smith and Elvina/Lavina Smith Irby. I would appreciate any help you can give me in this matter. If there is a book on early happenings of Greene County, Alabama, I would appreciate knowing and might be interested in purchasing one if any of the people are included. Broadnax Family - 03/25/00 -   I'm researching my mother's family, the Broadnaxes, for a book, and I've sent  an e-mail, but have not heard from, a professional genealogist named Kate DeFee, whom I found on an Alabama state web site registry. Ms. DeFee lists  both Alabama and Virginia as specialties, and these are the two states most  closely linked with my branch of the family. Is there anyone else anyone might   recommend for such a search if Ms. DeFee doesn't contact me soon? (Time is of the essence here.) What follows is a summary of what I've found thus far and what particular issues interest me most.

Harriet Ann Broadnax is my mother's name, her first name deriving from my maternal great-grandmother, Harriet Ann Means, whose family originated in Charleston, South Carolina. I mention my mother's middle name, "Ann," because it--like Agnes, Elizabeth, Henry, John, and William, among others--recurs among the Broadnax's given names, and "Ann" is always spelled without an "e" at the end, whether in the American or English branches of the family, which seems somewhat unusual. The earliest Henry occurring in any records was born in England in 1566.

Some Broadnaxes left the family home of Godmersham, Kent, in the very early 17th century, arriving in the Virginia colony before 1620, when Mary became the first Broadnax to be born on American soil. Edward, another early Broadnax, was born in the Jamestown colony in 1701. I would like to know more about the history of the Broadnaxes in Virginia--are we the same  Broadnaxes for whom Brodnax--a different spelling, obviously--County was named? what, if any, connection exists between the Virginia Broadnaxes and the Cocke family? I grew up hearing stories about my grandfather's ancestral home in America--the mammoth Bremo plantation in Virginia--which I know to have been owned by the Cocke family. Perhaps the two families intermarried . . . was there another plantation associated with the Broadnax family?

The Cockes--and perhaps this is no coincidence--began leaving Virginia for Greensboro, Alabama at about the same time that the Broadnaxes did, in the early 19th century. The Cocke family, as you probably know, was involved in the colonization movement and sent one group of their slaves to Liberia and another to Greensboro AL, hoping that the slaves could sustain themselves and thus eventually be manumitted or emanicipated. For the book I'm writing, I need to learn all of the details I can about the Broadnax involvement with slave-owning, which I presume occurred both in Virginia and in Alabama.

David Walker Broadnax is the first member of the family I can find for Greensboro; Henry W. Broadnax--a son? a grandson?--is recorded as having married Rachel M. Meriwether--sometimes misspelled Mewither--in Greensboro on 14 March 1857. My guess is that Rachel was from Virginia too, the Meriwethers having later married into Thomas Jefferson's family. Joseph Christopher Broadnax, my mother's father, was born in Greensboro, Alabama, around the turn of the last century. Joseph Christopher Broadnax's had two brothers, John, who moved to the Athens, GA area, and Henry, who moved to Dallas, TX. The father's name, I believe, was Henry as well.

To summarize, my three objectives are to learn about the history of the Broadnax family in Virginia, particularly their relationship to Bremo/the Cocke family and/or to the county named Brodnax and/or to any other Virginia places associated with my family; to discover how and why and when certain members of the Broadnax family in Virginia left for Alabama (to make more money in the new Black Belt cotton kingdom, I suspect); and, most important, the Broadnax family's involvement with slaveowning both in Virginia and in Alabama.

Can anyone help me, either by suggesting professionals in this field (how much do they usually cost?), or other web resources? ANYTHING you could advise or suggest is greatly appreciated. With sincere thanks, Diann Blakely dblakely@aol.com

The Springfield area was where Dr. Zachery Meriwether, Sr. lived and there was a Meriwether Landing on the Black Warrior River. I am advised by many writers, particularly in the Snedecor's Directory - 1856, for Greene County, that many of the church memberships, contained the names of the slave or black members also. I am researching the family of William Gray Little b. 19 Dec 1809 (birthplace uncertain at this time) and died 14 Mar 1889 in Marengo Co., AL I found my William Gray Little in the 1840 Greene Co. Census. He had lived in Georgia in 1830 and was on his way to Chambers Co. AL (in 1850 census) and then to Marengo Co. AL (there by 1860). I would also like to have my name added to your surname page as a Little researcher. Anne Ferguson acfjsl@pcola.gulf.net
