Clarence E. King Dies Suddenly At His Home

Clarence Earl King, 69, a prominent citizen, died suddenly at his home here last Sunday night, June 29. He had not been in good health in recent months, but his death was entirely unexpected and it came as a shock to his friends throughout this part of the state.

Mr. King was owner and operator of the King Body Shop in Greensboro, a business devoted to auto body repair, machine work, trailer manufacturing and the like. Born at Pleasant Ridge, in Greene County, on July 31, 1888, Mr. King was reared in that community. In 1906, he married Miss Lillie H Jones, and they had four sons, Earl, Howard, Robert and Clarence, Jr.

In that same year, 1906, Mr. King moved to Birmingham and was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church there for many years, serving both as deacon and elder. He was in the automobile business in Birmingham and in 1939 he moved to Greensboro to become shop foreman for the Shine Chevrolet Company. He held this position for seven years, and then opened his own auto body shop here in 1947. He operated this company until his death.

Mr. King was active in the Greensboro Presbyterian Church, and served as an elder for several years. He was a Mason for more than 30 years and a member of Greensboro Lodge.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church here at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. The Rev. F. E. Jordan, pastor, conducted the services and he was assisted by the Rev. James Cantrell, Birmingham Presbyterian minister. Burial was in Greene County, with the Masons in charge of the graveside services. As a boy, Mr. King attended the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church. The pall bearers were Coates Dismukes, C. D. Cothran Jr., Scott Hardenbergh, M. R. Whitely, Elisha Muckle and Stewart Bryant. Officers of the local Presbyterian Church were honorary pall bearers.

Surviving Mr. King are his widow, Mrs. Lillie H. King, four sons, Earl King of Detroit; Howard King of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Robert King of Birmingham and Clarence King, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale. One brother, Joseph H. King of Birmingham, one sister, Mrs. Onie Leath of Gadsden, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
