New Prospect was originally a part of Greene County until 1867 when the precincts to the east of the Warrior River became a part of Hale County. New Prospect is bordered on the west by the Black Warrior river, on the south by Big Brush Creek and on the north by Five Mile Creek.

Early settlers to the New Prospect Precinct included John R. Collins, James Cummings, Thomas B. Edmiston, Jacob Halbrook, Noah Harris, William Harris, Isaac Logan, Frederic Stickney, Henry Thompson, and Stephen and Larkin Wedgworth.
